AASU Sweeps 2008 Peach Belt Conference Tennis Tournament Championships

SAVANNAH, Ga. (April 20) - Host Armstrong Atlantic State completed a fourth straight tournament title sweep on Sunday at the 2008 Peach Belt Conference Tennis Championships, winning the men’s and women’s titles at the AASU Tennis Complex. The top-ranked AASU men blanked third-seeded GCSU, 5-0, while the second-ranked Lady Pirates defeated Francis Marion, 5-1.

The Pirate men (25-0) rolled through the tournament without dropping a point with three straight 5-0 wins. On Sunday, AASU picked up three doubles wins and two quick singles wins against the Bobcats (16-6). The doubles MVP team of Rafael Array and Tim Johannsen won a matchup of top 10-ranked duos with an 8-2 win over Erick Siqueira and Francis Yoshimoto at No. 1 doubles. Singles MVP Robert Jendelund then defeated Yoshimoto at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, while Array clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Giovane Nucci at No. 4 singles.  The tournament title is the fourth straight for the Pirates and earns the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.

In the women’s match, Francis Marion (20-2) made the doubles interesting as the duo of Magda Jezovicova and Tereza Sykorova rallied from 6-1 down to defeat Sofia Haggstrom and Alisa Kagukina, 8-6, at No. 3 singles. The doubles MVP duo of Iuliia Stupak and Gabriella Kovacs earned a comfortable 8-2 win at No. 1 singles for the Lady Pirates (26-1), then the duo of Martina Beckmann and Alida Muller-Wehlau fought off match point in a tiebreaker to come away with a 9-8 (9-7) win over Valeska Ibscher and Klara Vitkova at No. 2 doubles.

Singles play was all AASU as Stupak, the singles MVP, extended her undefeated dual match singles record against DII opponents to 49-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sykorova at No. 1 singles. Muller-Wehlau knocked off Jenny Ludwig, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles and Kovacs picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Klara Vitkova at No. 4 singles. The tournament title is AASU’s fifth straight and 14th overall in the 17-year history of the PBC women’s tennis tournament and the Lady Pirates earn the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships.

In Sunday’s third-place matches, fourth-seeded Columbus State (19-7) sprung an upset with a 5-4 win over second-seeded Clayton State (18-4) in women’s action, while Lander’s second-seeded men (17-6) earned third place with a 5-4 win over fifth-seeded Columbus State (13-11).

The fifth-place matches saw Augusta State’s women (17-7) notch a 5-4 win over GCSU (15-8), while Francis Marion’s men (16-5) notched a 5-0 win over Augusta State (15-9).

All of the PBC teams will now await word of bids to the NCAA Tennis Championships, to be announced by the NCAA on Sunday, May 4.
