College Baseball: AASU 11-8, St. Andrews 0-2
SAVANNAH, Ga. The No. 14-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State baseball team swept St. Andrews in its season-opening doubleheader, 11-0 and 8-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Pirate Field.
The Pirates (2-0) pounded out 16 hits in the first game, highlighted by junior second baseman Haydn Chinn's 4-for-4 day from the plate and junior Brian Pickel's first home run of the season and three RBI. Senior Joey Williams picked up the win for the Pirates, tossing six innings of one-hit shutout ball. Mitch Bowman took the loss for St. Andrews (1-3), giving up four runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
In the second game, the Pirates put up a four-spot in the first inning on Chinn's fifth hit of the day, a two-run home run, and junior catcher Scott Ray's two-run triple. Ray ended the second game with three hits a double, triple and two-run home run and four RBI. Junior Jason Ackley picked up the victory for AASU in the second game, giving up no earned runs in four innings of work. John Richmond gave up four runs in one-plus innings to take the loss for the Knights.
AASU returns to the field on Saturday, Feb. 5 as they host Mars Hill for an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader at Pirate Field.
