College Baseball: No. 21 Kennesaw State 10, AASU 1
SAVANNAH, Ga. No. 21-ranked Kennesaw State pounded out thirteen hits on way to a 10-1 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State, claiming a PBAC college baseball series sweep over the Pirates at Pirate Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (26-13) only managed four hits for the game off of Owls pitcher Nate Cotton, who hurled a complete game, striking out nine, to improve to 4-3 on the year. Senior Joey Williams took the loss for the Pirates, giving up eight hits and eight runs in 3 1/3 innings, dropping his record on the season to 6-4.
The Owls (26-12) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI double by Brad Reed and an RBI single by Travis Evans. KSU made it 5-0 in the second inning with a two-run single by Jon Carter and another RBI from Reed, this time on a single to left field. Junior Haydn Chinn provided the only run for the Pirates with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring junior catcher Scott Ray in the third inning to cut the KSU lead to 5-1. The Owls then scored three times in the top of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
KSU received three hits and three RBI from third baseman Reed and two hits and three RBI from shortstop Keith Hunter. Four different Pirates had singles for AASU, who dropped its seventh consecutive PBAC game.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, April 8 when they travel to Columbus, Ga., to face Columbus State in a PBAC series. The first game on Saturday is at 6:00 p.m. and the Sunday, April 9 dobuleheader is at 1:00 p.m.
