College Softball: AASU 17-19, Edward Waters 0-0

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 11-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State softball team swept Edward Waters College, 17-0 and 19-0, in its season-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Pirate Field.

Three Pirate pitchers – sophomore Annie Sells, junior Julie King and junior Maria Lopez – combined on back-to-back perfect games as no Edward Waters player reached base in the doubleheader. AASU put up 16 runs in the first inning en route to the 17-0 five-inning victory, then scored 10 and nine runs in the first and second inning of the second game en route to the 19-0 win.

Junior catcher Crystal Saccomanno went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader with a home run and six RBI. Lopez helped her cause in the second game with a grand-slam home run and four RBI, while first baseman Nicole Weirauch went 4-for-5 with six RBI in the twinbill.

Sells (1-0) and Lopez (1-0) picked up wins for the Pirates, while the Tigers' Monalisa Bell (0-2) suffered the loss in both games.

AASU returns to the field on Friday, Feb. 25 as they host the AASU Pirate Spring Classic at Pirate Field. The Pirates open tournament play with Lenoir-Rhyne at 3:00 p.m.
