AASU Basketball Sweeps Valdosta State In Men's/Women's Doubleheader
SAVANNAH, Ga. Sophomore David Koncul's two free throws with one minute remaining gave the AASU men's basketball team a 77-75 victory over Valdosta State on Tuesday evening, capping a doubleheader sweep of the Blazers by the Pirate men's and women's basketball squads.
Koncul's free throws two of his game-high 16 points gave Armstrong Atlantic State (2-1) a one-point lead, but two missed shots by Marcus Williams and an offensive foul by Darnell Brown ended any chance of a Valdosta State (1-1) win. Junior Robert Campbell also chipped in 14 points, seven assists and six steals for the Pirates, while Marcus Williams led the Blazers with 15 points and Kelvin Anderson grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
In the women's game, the Lady Pirates overcame a second-half 21-2 run by Valdosta State to defeat the Blazers, 58-56. Junior Kimberly Brooker's layup with 47 seconds remaining gave AASU's women (2-1) the victory. Brooker hit for a game-high 13 points, while junior Sonya Mintz added seven points and 12 rebounds. Valdosta State (1-1) was led by Tracy Sprolden's 12 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks.
