SAVANNAH, Ga. Junior Robert Campbell scored a career-high 29 points in leading the AASU men's basketball team to its third straight victory, a 70-60 win over North Florida in Peach Belt Athletic Conference basketball action at Alumni Arena on Wednesday evening.
The Pirates (7-9, 4-2 PBAC) trailed by six at halftime, 30-24, when North Florida scored seven consecutive points at the end of the first half. AASU began the second half by tying the game on two David Koncul threes, then took the lead for good on Tavares Brown's jumper five minutes into the second half. After that, Campbell took over, scoring 17 points in the final 15 minutes en route to his career-high night. Campbell finished with 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Junior David Koncul added 13 points for the Pirates. North Florida (6-10, 1-5 PBAC) kept it close behind the play of Sedessa Fisher, who scored a game-high 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting, but the rest of the Ospreys scored just 30 points on 13-of-39 shooting (36 percent).
In women's action, the Lady Ospreys shot a blistering 70.8 percent from the field in the second half to defeat the Lady Pirates, 77-68. North Florida (12-4, 6-0 PBAC) opened up a 10-point lead at halftime, then held on behind the play of Erin Cooke, who scored 21 points, and Bri Butery, who added 17. The Lady Pirates (3-13, 0-6 PBAC) made a charge in the second half, cutting the Lady Osprey lead to four on Melissa Germany's jumper with five minutes remaining, but two big threes by UNF's Misty Lavender sealed the victory. Freshman Duanda Ball scored a career-high 26 points to pace the Lady Pirates, while Sonya Mintz chipped in 18.
Both the AASU men's and women's teams return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22 as they travel to Milledgeville, Ga., to take on the Georgia College & State Bobcats in PBAC play.
