SAVANNAH, Ga. Junior Tavares Brown's jumper with 26 seconds remaining snapped a 63-all tie and gave the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates a 67-64 Peach Belt Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over Kennesaw State on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
The Pirates (9-10, 6-3 PBAC) and the Owls (12-5, 5-3 PBAC) were knotted at 26 at halftime, but Kennesaw State opened up a 10-point lead on the Pirates, 56-46, with just over eight minutes remaining. AASU battled back behind junior Robert Campbell, who had 16 points and five steals in the second half, who hit a layup with just under a minute remaining to give the Pirates their first lead of the second half since the 10:45 mark. A free throw by KSU's Rod Ashmore tied the game at 63, then set the stage for Brown's game-winner. Campbell finished the day with a game-high 24 points and six steals, while junior Cyrille Mainnemarre added 16 points. Ashmore led the Owls with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
In women's action, Kennesaw State used a 9-0 run in the second half to erase a 40-32 AASU second-half lead and go on to a 68-59 victory over the Lady Pirates. The Owls (16-2, 7-1 PBAC), ranked No. 12 in the nation, placed four players in double figures, led by Monika Dajksler's 17 points. Armstrong Atlantic State (4-15, 1-8 PBAC) committed 25 turnovers on the day and hit just five of 17 three-pointers. Sophomore Lexie Martin led the Lady Pirates with 15 points, while junior Sonya Mintz added 14 points and freshman Duanda Ball chipped in 11.
Both the AASU women's and men's teams return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 2, as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face the University of North Florida at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in PBAC action.
