SAVANNAH, Ga. – The AASU men's basketball squad halted a five-game losing streak by shooting 53 percent from the field in defeating Lander University, 76-65, in Peach Belt Athletic Conference action on Saturday evening at Alumni Arena.

The Pirates (5-9, 2-2 PBAC) raced out to a 10-point lead, 30-20, on Mick Jordan's three pointer with five minutes remaining in the first half. Lander (10-4, 1-1 PBAC) closed to within nine at halftime then scored the first nine points of the second half to tie the score at 38-all. AASU responded with a 15-4 run, sparked by junior Robert Campbell, who collected a game-high 23 points. The Senators cut the lead to four, 58-54, with just over six minutes remaining, but the Pirates hit several key free throws down the stretch to put the game away. Junior center Cyrille Mainnemarre added 18 points for AASU, while the Senators placed four players in double figures, led by Travis Lane and Geoff Brower, who each tallied 16 points.

In women's action, the Lady Senators jumped out to a 11-point halftime lead, 33-24, but the Lady Pirates fought back to get within three points with 42 seconds remaining. Sophomore Lexie Martin missed a tying three-point try with 38 ticks left on the clock, and Lander (9-4, 1-2 PBAC) sealed the victory on Cindy Lang's jumper. AASU (3-11, 0-4) lost its fifth in a row but placed four players in double figures, led by Duanda Ball's 12 points. Shorell Harrison led the Lady Senators with 13 points.

Both the AASU men's and women's teams return to action on Saturday, Jan. 15 as they travel to Columbus, Ga., to take on the Columbus State Cougars in PBAC play.
