SAVANNAH, Ga. The Armstrong Atlantic State men's basketball team shot 60 percent from the field and cruised to a 74-54 win over USC Spartanburg, completing a Peach Belt Athletic Conference basketball sweep on Saturday evening at the Armstrong Sports Center.
The Pirates (13-11, 10-4 PBAC) made it a successful Homecoming by building a 36-15 lead at halftime and keeping the Rifles (10-14, 5-9 PBAC) at a distance in winning by 20. USC Spartanburg never got within 16 points in the second half and all AASU players but one scored points on the evening. Junior Robert Campbell led the Pirates with 15 points, six assists and five steals, while David Koncul and Cyrille Mainnemarre each chipped in 11 points. AASU held USC Spartanburg to just 34 percent shooting from the floor and forced 24 Rifle turnovers. Spanky Hammonds led the Rifles with 15 points.
In women's action, the Lady Pirates held USC Spartanburg to just 27 percent shooting from the floor in picking up the 53-45 win over the Lady Rifles. The Lady Rifles (3-20, 2-13 PBAC) led, 25-23, at halftime but the Lady Pirates (6-18, 3-11 PBAC) picked up the offense in the second half, shooting 54 percent from the floor and building a 13-point lead with five minutes remaining. Kristin Brewer led a balanced Lady Pirate attack with 11 points, while Dorthell Little collected 12 rebounds. Brenda Wofford and Sarah Jansen led the Lady Rifles with 12 points apiece.
Both the AASU women's and men's teams return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 23, as they travel to Augusta, Ga., to face Augusta State University at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in PBAC action.
