SAVANNAH, Ga. Armstrong Atlantic State closed out the regular season with a PBAC doubleheader sweep of Clayton College & State at the Sports Center on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Lady Laker women, 74-65, and the Laker men, 66-53.
The Pirates (14-12, 11-5 PBAC) got a lift from the bench as AASU erased an early 8-2 Clayton College & State (11-14, 7-9 PBAC) lead and took a 15-8 lead behind two Brian Hobbs three-pointers. AASU would take a 26-21 lead into halftime and extend it to 10 points in the second half, but the Lakers battled back behind the threes of Charlie Frazier and Marty Fears to tie the game at 50-all. AASU would close out the game, however, on a 16-3 run to take the victory. Senior Vladimir Rasic playing in his final home game for the Pirates scored a career-high 12 points and tied for the team lead with Cyrille Mainnemarre and Robert Campbell. Frazier led the Lakers with 16 points.
In women's action, the Lady Pirates (7-19, 4-12 PBAC) went up by seven, 33-25, at halftime and shot over 50 percent in the second half to pull away from the Lady Lakers (8-18, 4-12 PBAC) and win, 74-65. Freshman Duanda Ball led all scorers with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, including six-of-10 three-pointers. Lexie Martin added 13 points for AASU, while the Lady Lakers were led by Joya Collier's 13 points.
The AASU men's basketball team will enter the Peach Belt Athletic Conference tournament in Greenwood, S.C. as the No. 2 seed in the South Division. The Pirates will play the No. 3 seed from the North Division, UNC Pembroke, at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, in first-round action.
