USC Aiken Captures 2005 PBC Golf Championship

SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 19) - USC Aiken fired a final-round 284 to capture the 2005 Peach Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship by eight strokes over host Armstrong Atlantic State on Tuesday afternoon at Southbridge Golf Club in Savannah, Ga. It is the defending DII National Champion Pacers' sixth PBC Championship and third in the last four years.

The No. 1-ranked Pacers started the day with a four stroke lead over the Pirates, and Armstrong Atlantic made a charge on the front, getting to within one stroke of the leaders when Jason Fober and Tripp Coggins each carded front-nine 33s, but Dane Burkhart began the back nine with three birdies on holes 9-14 to give USC Aiken back its cushion and the PBC medalist closed out his round of 67 with five birdies and no bogeys for a two-stroke individual win.

USC Aiken finished the three-round tournament with an 852 total, 12-under par, while AASU fired a 288 on Tuesday to finish with an 860 total, four-under-par. Columbus State finished in third place with a 299 round on Tuesday and an 888 total, besting GC&SU (890) by two strokes. Francis Marion (910), UNC Pembroke (923) and Clayton State (948) rounded out the team standings.

Burkhart's title, his third individual title of 2005, came in dominating fashion as the PBC Co-Player of the Year carded 16 birdies in the tournament, leading all players with an 11-under-par 205 total. His teammate Brown, who shared PBC Player of the Year honors, finished second individually after a final-round 68 and placed two strokes back with a nine-under-par 207 total. AASU junior Tripp Coggins carded a 69 on Tuesday to finish third with a three-under-par 213, while teammate Jonathan Cox finished fourth (-1, 215) and Columbus State's Brandon Kuban and AASU's Jason Fober each shot two-over-par 218 totals to finish fifth. All six golfers earn All-PBC Tournament honors with their top-five finishes.

By virtue of their PBC Tournament title, the Pacers earn the league's automatic bid to the upcoming 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. The Atlantic/Southeast Regional will take place on May 3-4 at the Bull Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ga., and several other PBC schools will now await word of possible at-large bids to the Championships. The NCAA DII Men's Golf National Championships will be back in Savannah on May 17-20 at the Club at Savannah Harbor, hosted by Armstrong Atlantic.
