DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Davis saw its six-match winning streak come to an end Sunday, but the 21st-ranked Aggies men's tennis team proved once again it could compete favorably with one of the top Division II teams, losing a tough 5-4 decision to 4th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) at Hickey Courts.
The Aggies, who hadn't lost since Feb. 5, dropped to 6-3.
Armstrong Atlantic, a national semifinalist last in 1999,
improved to 11-2. It was another good showing for UC Davis, which
earlier this year upset No.5 Hawaii Pacific.
UC Davis won two of three doubles matches against the Pirates,
but lost four of six singles.
"I just think it's a good opportunity to be able to play teams like this," said Aggie Coach Daryl Lee. "I think we've learned that we're good in doubles but that we can become even better. At the same time, in singles we know we have a lot to improve on."
The Aggies won the top two doubles matches by 8-4 scores as
Tate Chandler and Daniel Young won at No.1 and Yaro Vinogradsky
and Greg Lee were victorious at No.2. In singles, Paul Dilloway
beat Aref Jallali 6-2, 6-3 at No.5 and Chandler beat Dave Webley
6-3, 7-6 at No.6. Chandler trailed 4-2 in the tiebreaker before
coming
back to win, 11-9.
UC Davis is off until hosting Division III power UC Santa Cruz on Apr. 8.
