College Baseball: No. 17 AASU 13, No. 6 Southern Indiana 2

SAVANNAH, Ga. (February 10) – The No. 17-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad used a seven-run fifth inning to pick up a 13-2 collegiate baseball victory over No. 6-ranked Southern Indiana, completing a three-game sweep of the Screaming Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Pirate Field.

The Pirates (6-0) have now started the 2008 season with three-game sweeps of then-No. 3 Florida Southern and No. 6 Southern Indiana. The previous five contests were close affairs – Sunday’s game was close until the fifth, when AASU sent 12 men to the plate and collected eight hits in the inning, including three doubles and a two-run home run from senior Joey Davis.

Davis’ home run was his second two-run blast of the day and the first basemen led the 15-hit parade as every Pirate starter rapped out at least one hit on the afternoon. Meanwhile, junior Jeff Chase (1-0) pitched six one-hit innings, striking out seven, to pick up the victory. The righthander did not allow a hit until the sixth inning as well.

The Pirates chased Southern Indiana starter Patrick Crider (0-1) in the fifth inning as the first three batters reached against the lefthander. Reliever P.J. Thomas came in and promptly gave up a two-run double to Nick Pyron and, two batters later, the two-run shot to Davis. Crider gave up six hits and seven runs – six earned – in four-plus innings pitched to take the loss.

AASU freshman Matt Tufts launched a home run in his first collegiate at-bat in the seventh inning, while Southern Indiana’s Wes Fink delivered a solo home run in the eighth inning.

Carlos Cardoza-Oquendo picked up three hits and three runs scored as well for the Pirates.
