College Baseball: No. 25 AASU 21, Southern Connecticut State 4

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 25-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad pounded out 22 hits in a 21-4 victory over visiting Southern Connecticut State on Friday afternoon in Savannah, the seventh straight win for the Pirates.

Armstrong Atlantic (7-1) scored in each of the first four innings, including a seven-run fourth inning that chased Southern Connecticut State (0-1) opening day starter Josh Terletzky. The Owls scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings to close the gap to 12-4, but the Pirates plated three in the seventh and six in the eighth for the final margin, the most runs scored by the Pirates since AASU defeated Barton College, 22-6, on April 6, 2006.

Jeff Chase (2-1) hurled five shutout innings to pick up the win for the Pirates, giving up just four hits and two walks while striking out six. Terletzky (0-1) did not make it out of the fourth inning, giving up 11 hits and nine runs – all earned – in three-plus innings.

Reigning PBC Player of the Week Truman Marek reached base six times in the game, drawing three walks while adding a pair of singles and an RBI double, scoring five times. Tyler Evans, Josh Wilson and Kenny Cail also had three hits apiece for the Pirates, while Derrek Miller clubbed a three-run home run and Mitch Hudson added a solo shot.

Southern Connecticut State had a trio of players collect two hits – Nick Czekaj, Jim McLaughlin and Kevin Bowerman, while Joe Kahlden delivered a solo home run in the seventh inning.

The Pirates will face the Owls on Saturday, February 17, at 1:00 p.m. The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. start, which has been moved from its originally scheduled Noon start time.
