College Baseball: AASU 7, No. 3 Florida Southern 6 (11 inn.)

SAVANNAH, Ga. (February 2) – Nick Pyron’s bases-loaded single drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give host Armstrong Atlantic State a 7-6 collegiate baseball victory over No. 3-ranked Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon at Pirate Field.

The Pirates (2-0) trailed, 6-1, after the top of the fourth inning against the Mocs (0-2), but began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout from Carlos Cardoza-Oquendo and a two-run double down the left field line from Kenny Cail, making the score 6-4.

Armstrong Atlantic State would tie up the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning on Derrek Miller’s two-RBI single, making the score 6-6. The Mocs had a chance to push across the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, but after Colin Kaline’s leadoff double, senior Nate Herder set down the next three Mocs to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the 11th, Juan Dorado led off with an infield single to third, and advanced to third base on an errant throw by Florida Southern third baseman Arden McWilliams. Reliever Daniel Tillman (0-1) intentionally walked the next two batters, setting up Pyron, who delivered the game-winning single through the left side for the win.

Herder hurled four shutout innings, giving up just two hits, while Blake Sills (1-0) pitched a hitless top of the 11th to pick up the win for the Pirates.  Tillman took the loss, giving up two hits and the winning run without recording an out.

Cail led the Pirates at the plate with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI, while Miller, Joey Davis and Pyron each collected two hits. The Mocs scored all but one run with the longball – David Golliner’s three-run home run in the third inning and Arden McWilliams’ two-run shot in the fourth. Kaline finished the game with three hits, including two doubles, as well.

The Pirates and the Mocs wrap up their three-game series on Sunday with a single game at 1:00 p.m. at Pirate Field.
