College Baseball: No. 3 GCSU 11 (12 inn.) -18, AASU 10-3

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. The Georgia College & State University baseball players put in their hours Saturday afternoon, making a sweep of conference foe Armstrong Atlantic State University in a double header that lasted just under nine hours. The Bobcats improved their record to 18-4, 8-1 in the Peach Belt Conference, while the Pirates fell to 13-7, 3-6 in conference play.
In game one, the Bobcats battled through 12 innings before coming away with an 11-10 win. GCSU would get on the board first as Chandler Snell reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Daniel Heflin to score.
Armstrong would answer in the top of the third as Truman Marek gave up a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Brad Bohannon. Sean Hotzak followed with a sacrifice bunt, scoring Marc Noble and putting Armstrong up 2-1. The Pirates added to that in top of the fourth as Josh Dallas singled to second, scoring Kenny Cail. Brad Bohannon followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Josh Wilson. Tyler Evans would single to left field, and Josh Dallas would score. In the fifth, the Pirates gave more of the same, scoring four runs on four hits, taking an eight run lead.
GCSU would answer back in the bottom of the sixth, as Rich Janofsky roped a single into left field to score Chandler Snell and Brian Shaughnessy, bringing the score to 9-3. In the top of the seventh, Sean Marek would give up a sacrifice fly to left field for Armstrong, scoring Brad Bohannon and bringing the score to 10-3.
GCSU answered back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on a double from Brandon Anderson, cutting Armstrong's lead to five. In the bottom of the ninth, it was "put up or shut up" time, and the Bobcats definitely "put up," scoring five runs on five hits and taking the game into extra innings. The next two innings would be fruitless for both teams, but in the bottom of the 12th, Brandon Anderson would score the game winning run on a single up the middle by Rich Janofsky.
Leading the Pirates on offense was Josh Wilson, going 5-5 and scoring twice. Tyler Evans went 3-4 with two RBIs, and Brad Bohannon went 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. For the Bobcats, Rich Janofsky went 3-6 with two RBIs and one run scored, Brandon Anderson went 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Justin Mills went 2-6 with an RBI, and Daniel Heflin went 2-6 with two runs scored.
Although eight different Bobcats saw time on the hill, Matt Howard (4-0) would come away with the win after putting in an inning of work, giving up one hit, one walk, and striking out two. Ross Partee tossed 5.1 innings for the Pirates, giving up three runs on two hits, walking five, and fanning three. Truman Marek (2-1) took the loss for the Pirates, giving up one hit and one run, walking one, and striking out two.
Game two of the double header was a much shorter length, being a seven inning affair. Armstrong would get on the board first, with Marc Noble scoring on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Evans in the top of the first. GCSU answered back in the bottom of the first, tacking on four runs on four hits.
In the bottom of the second, the Bobcats would bring the score to 9-1 after putting up five runs on four hits, including a 3 RBI homer from Rich Janofsky. The Pirates would answer back in the top of the third, as Brad Bohannon would score on a fielder's choice. GCSU would respond by putting up five more runs on four more hits in the bottom of the third, bring the score to 14-2.
Both teams scored in the fifth, with Josh Dallas scoring for the Pirates on a Tyler Evans single, and Andrew Evans scoring on a wild pitch for the Bobcats, bringing the score to 15-3. In the bottom of the sixth, GCSU would close the deal, scoring three runs on four hits, making the final score 18-3.
For the Bobcats, Rich Janofsky led the offensive drive, going 1-2 with four RBIs and one run scored. Hans Stancil went 3-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. The Bobcats had three other players with two RBIs each and four other players with two hits each. For the Pirates, offensive leaders were Tyler Evans, who went 1-3 with two RBIs, and Chris Smith, who went 2-2.
Jayson Bennett pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits, while walking two and fanning five in seven innings of work. Jeff Chase took the loss for the Pirates, giving up nine runs on eight hits in just 1.1 innings.
GCSU baseball will be back in action on Monday, taking on Millersville University in a double header beginning at 3pm at John Kurtz Field in Milledgeville. AASU returns to action on Monday with a 2:00 p.m. game against Fairmont State at Pirate Field.
