College Baseball: No. 21 AASU 20, No. 28 California (Pa.) 2

SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 10) – The Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad pounded out 11 extra-base hits en route to a season-high 20 runs in a 20-2 win over No. 28-ranked California (Pa.) on Monday afternoon in 2008 Savannah Invitational action at Pirate Field.

The No. 21-ranked Pirates (12-5) had eight doubles, two triples and a two-run home run from senior Joey Davis in the victory over the Vulcans (1-2). Davis and Josh Wilson each collected two doubles in their four hits apiece in the game, while Davis drove in four runs. Michael Price had three hits, including a triple, and four runs scored.

The beneficiary of all the offense was lefty starter Cody Walden (3-2), who gave up five hits and two runs – one earned – and struck out eight to pick up the victory. Andrew Rafalski (0-1) took the loss for the Vulcans, giving up 10 hits and nine runs – eight earned – in 3 2/3 innings pitched.

The runs were the most scored by the Pirates since a 27-9 win over Augusta State on April 15, 2007, and the eight doubles are the most by a Pirate team in the last decade.

Sam DiMatteo and Stephen Hermann collected two hits apiece for the Vulcans.

AASU returns to action on Tuesday, March 11, with a 2:00 p.m. contest against Kutztown in continuing 2008 Savannah Invitational action at Pirate Field. California (Pa.) will also be in action in the Invitational on Tuesday, taking on Concord at 10:00 a.m. at Chain Field.
