College Baseball: No. 21 AASU 8, Concord 3

SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 12) – Junior Garrett Smith limited the Mountain Lions to just one hit over six innings while the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates clubbed three home runs in an 8-3 win over Concord in 2008 Savannah Invitational action on Wednesday afternoon at Pirate Field.

Garrett Smith, making his first start of the season, gave up a two-run home run to Greyson Schram in the first inning, giving Concord (10-3) an early 2-0 lead. The Pirates (14-5) responded in the bottom of the first inning with four unearned runs, getting an RBI single by Joey Davis and a three-run home run by Nick Pyron after an error by Concord’s shortstop Donovan Huffer that kept the inning alive.

Smith (2-1) was dominant after that, allowing just one more baserunner over the next five innings and retiring his final 10 batters in picking up the win. He finished the day by striking out two and giving up just the two runs and one hit.

AASU added solo home runs by Chris Smith in the second inning and Josh Wilson in the seventh inning and also got an RBI single by Smith in the fourth inning for the Pirates’ eight runs. Concord added a solo home run from Matt Kuntz in the seventh inning for its third run of the day.

Concord starter Allen Schurdell went the distance for the Mountain Lions, giving up 14 hits and eight runs – four earned – in eight innings while striking out three.

Six different Pirates had multi-hit days, led by Wilson’s three hits. Freshman Matt Tufts had two hits, with a double, as did Kenny Cail.

Earlier in the day, California (Pa.) defeated Fairmont State, 10-1, in Savannah Invitational action.

AASU concludes its action on in the Savannah Invitational on Thursday, March 13, with a 2:00 p.m. contest against Fairmont State at Pirate Field.
