College Baseball: No. 21 AASU 5, Fairmont State 3
SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 13) The Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad closed out its action in the 2008 Savannah Invitational by winning its fifth straight game, downing Fairmont State 5-3 on Thursday afternoon at Pirate Field.
The Pirates (15-5) scored three unearned runs in the first four innings, building a 3-0 lead. The Fighting Falcons (5-9) fought back with three runs in the sixth inning, capitalizing on four straight walks and a two-run RBI single by Justin Cunningham, tying the game at 3-3.
AASU retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Michael Price raced home from first base on Juan Dorado’s single to right center field, putting the Pirates up 4-3. A Joey Davis solo home run in the bottom of the seventh provided an insurance run.
Blake Sills closed out the win for the Pirates, hurling two hitless innings and striking out three to pick up his first save of the season. Steven Currie (2-0) garnered the win, going 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief, striking out two.
Fairmont State starter Todd Dillon (0-1) took the loss, giving up four hits and four runs one earned in six innings, walking four and striking out two.
Dorado had two hits on the day and three steals, while Price scored three of the Pirates’ five runs and also swiped a base. Andy Leach was the only Fighting Falcon player with multiple hits with two.
Earlier in the day, Concord defeated California (Pa.), 10-6, in Savannah Invitational action.
AASU returns to action on Saturday, March 15, with a 3:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest at Augusta State at Lake Olmstead Park.
