College Baseball: No. 13 AASU 13, Findlay 3
SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 3) The Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad picked up a 13-3 win over Findlay in 2008 Savannah Invitational action at Pirate Field on Monday afternoon.
The No. 13-ranked Pirates (10-3) collected 17 hits and overcame a 2-0 deficit in the third inning with eight runs over three innings, building an 8-2 lead and cruising to the victory.
Nick Pyron had two doubles and a second straight four-hit day to pace the Pirates, while Tommy Ray collected three hits and drove in six runs, including a three-run home run in the seventh inning. Chris Smith and Derrek Miller also collected three hits apiece for AASU.
Steven Currie (1-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive output, picking up the win in relief with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, striking out two. Six different Pirates saw action on the mound as Westley Lucas also threw two innings of scoreless ball.
Findlay (0-3) was led by Jeff Peters and Kyle Blessing, who each collected three hits, while Jon Dollinger added two hits as the Oilers picked up 13 in the game. Patrick Burkin (0-1) took the loss for the Oilers, giving up 14 hits and 11 runs in seven innings pitched.
In the day’s first Invitational contest, No. 21-ranked Wayne State (Neb.) improved to 5-1 with a 12-2 win over Bellarmine on Monday morning.
AASU returns to action on Wednesday, March 5, with a 2:00 p.m. contest against Wayne State in continuing 2008 Savannah Invitational action at Pirate Field.
