College Baseball: Pfeiffer 3, No. 24 AASU 2

SAVANNAH, Ga. (April 8) – Freshman righthander Adam Sedberry hurled his first collegiate complete game, giving up eight hits and two runs in pitching the visiting Pfeiffer Falcons to a 3-2 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State on Tuesday afternoon at Pirate Field.

Sedberry helped the Falcons (21-23) halt a five-game losing streak, while the Pirates (22-12) dropped their third in a row and fourth in their last five games.

The Falcons built a 3-0 lead by the fourth inning, scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth frames. Ryan Brown’s RBI double in the second put Pfeiffer on top, 1-0, then Shawn Coke’s team-leading eighth home run of the season to center field pushed the lead to 2-0 in the third. Brown added an RBI groundout in the fourth inning.

The Pirates responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back RBI doubles from Nick Pyron and Kenny Cail, closing the gap to 3-2.

After that point, however, AASU could not get to Sedberry. Three times in the final four innings the Pirates got the leadoff runner on, but were unable to push across the tying run. Sedberry struck out six and walked just one, improving to 4-2 on the year. Garrett Smith (2-2) took the loss for the Pirates, giving up two runs and six hits in three innings.

Tyler Smith led the Falcons at the plate with a 3-for-3 day, reaching base in all five trips to the plate, while Coke, Hayes Hinson and Eric Shoemaker each collected two hit days. Josh Wilson, Pyron and Chris Smith each had two hits apiece for the Pirates.

AASU returns to action on Saturday, April 12, with a Noon doubleheader against North Georgia in Peach Belt Conference action. Pfeiffer is next in action on Friday, April 11, with a Carolinas Conference contest at Erskine at 2:30 p.m.
