Men's Basketball: AASU 72, Wayne State (Neb.) 62

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Sophomore Brian Hobbs scored a career-high 15 points to lead the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates to a 72-62 win over Wayne State College in the Disney’s Division II TipOff Classic at the Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Hobbs led four AASU players in double figures as the Pirates erased a four-point Wayne State halftime lead that the Wildcats stretched to nine points, 52-43, with 10:45 remaining in the game. Consecutive layups by senior Robert Campbell and Hobbs cut the lead to five, then a Tavares Brown layup followed by a Mick Jordan three-pointer tied the game at 52-52 with 7:06 remaining. AASU finally took the lead for good on Bart Westgeest’s jumper with 1:44 remaining and another three-pointer by Jordan put the Pirates up by five, 67-62, with 57 seconds remaining. AASU(1-1) held the Wildcats scoreless over the last 2:36 of the game in picking up its first win of the season.

Hobbs hit five of seven shots from the field, including three of four three-pointers, en route to his career high 15 points. Campbell and Brown each scored 11 points and Campbell added nine assists and two steals for AASU. The Wildcats (0-2) were led by Nathan Mulder’s game-high 24 points. AASU hit a stellar 59.5 percent of its shots (25-of-42) and also hit 7-of-13 three-pointers on the day (53.8 percent). The Pirates held the Wildcats to just 26.7 percent from three-point range in the second half.

AASU will now face the winner of Pittsburg State/St. Joseph’s at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow in the fifth-place game of the Disney’s Division II TipOff Classic.
