Men's Basketball: Armstrong Atlantic State 63, Valdosta State 51
SAVANNAH, Ga. Senior Robert Campbell scored a game-high 15 points and became Armstrong Atlantic State's all-time leader in steals, passing Ike Williams, as the Pirates defeated Valdosta State, 63-51, at the Complex in Valdosta, Ga., on Tuesday evening.
Campbell's second steal of the game gave the Hinesville native 263 for his career as the Pirates (3-2) won in Valdosta for the first time under head coach Griff Mills. Sophomore David Koncul chipped in 14 points and senior Cyrille Mainnemarre added 10 points for AASU, who shot 52 percent from the field. Valdosta State (1-2) was led by three players who scored eight points apiece Chip Stroud, Ben Bates and Jon Bolden.
The Pirates jumped out to a 21-11 lead in the first ten minutes of the contest, then extended the lead to 14 on a Campbell layup with 6:24 remaining in the first half. A 10-2 run by the Blazers cut AASU's lead to six, 29-23, at intermission, and the Blazers would get within four points on Matt Jones' dunk with 16:54 remaining in the second half, but the Pirates extended their lead to double digits on a three-point basket by Campbell with 11:35 left and never looked back.
AASU next hosts Clark Atlanta on Friday, Nov. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Alumni Arena.
