SPARTANBURG, S.C. - In the first game of the
afternoon, Stephanie Feyes scored 18 points to lead the USCS Lady
Rifles over the Armstrong Atlantic State Lady Pirates 67-54. With
the win, USCS improves to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in the Peach Belt
Conference. Armstrong falls to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in the league.
In mens action, Donta Humphries scored 17 points and Armstrong made a PBC-record 21-of-22 free throws to defeat USCS 76-64. The loss dropped USCS to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in the league. Armstrong Atlantic State improves to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
In the womens game, USCS held a 13-11 advantage with 11:37 to play in the first half before the Lady Rifles went on a 11-3 run to open up a 10-point lead with 8:19 on the clock. However, Armstrong went on a 4-0 run over the final 1:30 of the half to close to within 35-29 at halftime. Feyes had 13 of her 18 points in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Armstrong cut the Lady Rifle lead to three points with 18:09 to play in the game, but USCS countered with a 12-3 run to open a 12-point lead, 47-35, with 10:35 to play. From there, the lead never dipped below six points the rest of the way as USCS remained in control of the game.
Betsy Farmer had a solid 10 points off the bench for the Lady Rifles. Lexie Martin led Armstrong with 22 points, while Zandrique Cason added 14 points and six rebounds.
In mens action, Armstrong shot 55.6 percent from the floor for the game and 95.5 from the free throw line to down the Rifles. Armstrong began the game on an 11-2 run over the first four minutes before USCS made a run. The Rifles went on a 15-6 run over the next nine minutes to tie the score at 17-17 with 6:56 to play.
However, a 7-0 spurt by Armstrong allowed the Pirates to regroup and went into the half with a 31-20 lead.
After the Pirates went up by 13 to open the second half, USCS responded with yet another run. After a Rifle 14-0 run, keyed by six points and two assists from Eric Murrell, USCS took a 40-39 lead at the 13:25 mark.
Two ties and two lead changes later, Lamarr Chears converted a layup with 9:22 to play to give Armstrong the lead for good. From there, the Pirates went on a 18-7 run to take a 67-54 lead with 1:55 on the clock, sealing the win.
Jason Sanders scored 14 points and Dave Pisarcik added 10 for Armstrong. Curtis Blair scored a career-high 16 points to lead USCS. Murrell finished with 12 points, while Kevin Harrington added 11.
