AASU Splits PBC Basketball Doubleheader With Lander
SAVANNAH, Ga. Armstrong Atlantic State split a Peach Belt Conference basketball doubleheader with Lander University on Saturday evening at Alumni Arena. The AASU women's team picked up its first win of the season with a 57-52 win over the Lady Senators, while the Lander men's team ended AASU's eight-game home winning streak with a 53-50 win over the Pirates.
Junior All-America candidate Zandrique Cason led the Lady Pirates with 14 points and 15 rebounds as the Lady Pirates (1-5, 1-1 PBC) forced 28 Lady Senator turnovers in picking up their first win. Junior Shaletra Hodge also picked up a double-double, her first as a Lady Pirate, with 10 points and 10 rebounds and junior Marloes Renskers collected 12 points, five assists and four steals. Lander (1-5, 0-1 PBC) got 12 points from Karmen Wilson in the loss.
In the men's game, Adrian Penland's three-point shot with 36 seconds remaining snapped a 50-all tie and gave Lander (1-5, 0-1 PBC) the victory. AASU (1-3, 1-1 PBC) had fought back from a four-point second-half deficit and had the lead, 50-48, at the 2:09 mark, but did not score the rest of the game. Terry Delaney led the Senators with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds, while Tony Ferris added 11 points and Penland added 10. The Pirates got a career-high 16 points from junior Dave Pisarcik and a double-double from senior Willard Winn's with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The AASU men's and women's basketball teams are next in action on Tuesday, December 4 as they host cross-town rival Savannah State at 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men). Lander next hosts USC Spartanburg in PBC action on Saturday, December 8.
