FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1-26-08
Men's College Basketball: AASU 68, Lander 48
Women's College Basketball: AASU 66, Lander 52
SAVANNAH, Ga. (January 26) Honored before the game for setting the Armstrong Atlantic State women’s basketball all-time rebounding record earlier in the week, senior Kaneetha Gordon set the single-game Alumni Arena rebounding record on Saturday evening in the Lady Pirates’ 66-52 Peach Belt Conference victory over first-place Lander. The AASU men completed the doubleheader sweep with a 68-48 win.
Gordon and the Lady Pirates (10-6, 4-5 PBC) put the clamps on the nation’s second-highest scoring club by holding the Lady Bearcats (13-6, 7-2 PBC) to just 28.8 percent shooting and Lander’s lowest point total since the 2005-06 season. The missed shots created the opportunity for Gordon to grab 19 rebounds, breaking the Alumni Arena record of 18, set by Demetria McClouden on Dec. 5, 1998.
The Lady Pirates placed four players in double figures on the night, led by Lacey Willis’ 16 points. Gordon and Jasmine Herron each chipped in 12 points apiece, while Alandris Griffin added 10 points and four blocked shots. Reigning PBC Player of the Year Tiara Good was held to just eight points on 3-of-17 shooting from the floor for Lander, but teammate LaShonda Chiles picked up the scoring slack with a game-high 21 points to lead the Lady Bearcats.
In the men’s contest, senior Jamaal Galloway nailed five three-pointers en route to a game-high 15 points and became the 17th player in Armstrong Atlantic State men’s basketball history to reach the 1,000 point plateau in the Pirates’ 20-point win over the Bearcats. Galloway is just the fourth AASU player to reach 1,000 points in the last 10 years.
As a team, the Pirates (11-5, 5-4 PBC) hit nine of 20 three-pointers on the night and held the Bearcats (6-10, 3-6 PBC) to just 30.8 percent shooting from the floor, including just 4-of-22 from beyond the arc. Junior Calvin Wilson tied Galloway for game high honors with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor, while Patrick Sanou added 13 points and William Kane dished out 12 assists. Brenton Harris led the Bearcats on the day with eight points and 11 rebounds.
The Pirates return to action on Wednesday, January 30, with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Clayton State.
