Women's Basketball: AASU 70, Augusta State 69

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior Lexie Martin's jump shot at the buzzer propelled the Armstrong Atlantic State women's basketball squad to a 70-69 over the host Augusta State Lady Jaguars on Wednesday evening, giving AASU a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader split with ASU.

Martin's basket - accounting for two of her game-high 22 points - gave the Lady Pirates (7-11, 5-6 PBC) their first win of the season away from Savannah. The winning shot came just seven seconds after Augusta State's Faith Nixon hit two free throws to give the Lady Jaguars (6-12, 1-10) a one-point lead. ASU led by four at halftime, 31-27, and by as many as six points with just 4:12 remaining in the game, but the Lady Pirates rallied to pick up the victory. Martin hit on 7-of-13 shots from the field, including 5-of-8 three-pointers, for her 22 points, while junior Kristin Brewer added a season-high 16 points and junior Zandrique Cason recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Nixon led the Lady Jaguars with 19 points.

In the men's game, Augusta State (14-4, 9-2 PBC) held the Pirates to just 30 percent shooting from the floor, including a dreadful 1-of-14 from three-point range, to knock off AASU (10-8, 6-5 PBC) by 23 points, 78-55. PBC Player of the Week Gary Boodnikoff led all scorers with 20 points, while T.J. Ott chipped in 15 points for the Jaguars. For AASU, it was their worst regular-season conference loss since losing by 26 points to USC Spartanburg, 71-45, on January 7, 1993. Senior Will Winn led the Pirates offensively with 17 points, while junior Dave Pisarcik chipped in 14 points.

The Pirate basketball teams return to action on Saturday, February 2 as they continue their three-game road trip at Kennesaw State for doubleheader action beginning at 2:00 p.m.
