SAVANNAH, Ga. 1999-2000 Peach Belt Player of the Year Robert Campbell scored 20 points and junior Mick Jordan chipped in 15 points as the Armstrong Atlantic State men's basketball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Francis Marion with a 67-50 win on Wednesday evening.
The Pirates (9-5, 2-0 PBC) jumped out to a 32-20 halftime lead behind Jordan's four first-half three-pointers and never looked back in beating the Patriots (3-8, 0-2 PBC), who have lost seven straight after opening the season 3-1.
Jordan finished the game five-of-seven from three-point range and Campbell hit nine-of-13 shots from the field en route to his game-high 20 points. The PBC's leader in assists and steals, Campbell added six assists and three steals to his sheet. Junior Bart Westgeest chipped in eight points and eight assists while Francis Marion was led by Andre Bovell and Kenyata Chisholm, who each scored 11 points.
In women's action, the Lady Pirates knocked off No. 22-ranked Francis Marion, 75-72, in overtime for their first PBC win of the season. Sophomore center Zandrique Cason scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds but Lexie Martin's three-pointer with 1:32 remaining in the extra frame that put AASU (5-6, 1-1 PBC) up for good. Martin finished the evening with 11 points and six assists while senior Michelle Hubbard chipped in 15 points for the Lady Pirates. Francis Marion (7-4, 0-2 PBC) placed four players in double figures, led by Anna Kolbinsky's 14 points and Kendra Rowland's 13 points and game-high 15 rebounds.
The doubleheader sweep is the first for the Pirates over Francis Marion since the February 8, 1997, when the Lady Pirates defeated the Lady Patriots, 61-58 and the men's team defeated FMU
73-59 at Alumni Arena.
The AASU men's and women's basketball teams travel to Lander for a doubleheader against the Senators on Saturday, January 6 at 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men).
