SAVANNAH, Ga. The Armstrong Atlantic State men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 10 with a hard-fought 66-64 victory over visiting North Florida on Wednesday evening, earning a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of the Ospreys.
The Pirates (17-5, 9-0 PBC) got 23 points from senior center Cyrille Mainnemarre, who hit 10-of-17 shots from the floor, and 10 points and 16 rebounds from Greg Favors, but the biggest points were from senior Robert Campbell, who hit two free throws with 35 seconds remaining to put the Pirates up, 65-64. UNF's Koran Godwin, the PBC's leading scorer, then missed a 18-foot jumper with 10 seconds left and Favors handed the rebound off to junior Donta Humphries. Humphries made one of two free throws, then Godwin tried an off-balance three-pointer with two seconds left that went awry, giving AASU its 10th straight win.
UNF (10-9, 4-5 PBC) was led by Chris Ireland's 19 points as the Pirates held Godwin entering the game averaging 22.4 points per game to half of his average, 11 points, on 4-of-11 shooting from the floor. Gaius Jenkins added a double-double for the Ospreys with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The 10-game win streak is the sixth in AASU history and is the fourth longest current win streak in NCAA Division II.
In women's action, the Lady Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak with a 57-55 win over North Florida. Lori Green's transition layup with 26 seconds remaining gave the Lady Pirates (8-11, 3-6 PBC) the lead and UNF's Leigh Gaudy turned the ball over with three seconds remaining, ending the Lady Ospreys (11-8, 5-4 PBC) chance of winning.
Sophomore Zandrique Cason and junior Lexie Martin led the Lady Pirates with 12 points apiece while sophomore Kristin Brewer added 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor, including two three-pointers. Skye Barber, the reigning PBC Player of the Week, led the Lady Ospreys with 15 points, while Gaudy chipped in 12 for UNF.
The AASU men's and women's basketball teams are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 3 as they travel to Columbus State University for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
