Atlantic State swept a Peach Belt Confernece college basketball
doubleheader from visiting Francis Marion on Wednesday evening at
Alumni Arena. Both teams extended their winning streak to five
the Pirate men used 13 three-pointers to bomb the Patriots,
75-59, while the AASU women put up their best defensive effort of
the season in a 64-47 win over FMU.
The Pirates (9-2, 3-1 PBC) and the Patriots (6-4, 1-2 PBC) played an even 15 minutes to open the mens contest, but with the Pirates trailing by one, 24-23, with 6:31 left in the first half, sophomore Jamaal Galloway came off the bench to hit four straight three-pointers, keying a 20-7 run to end the first half and give AASU a 40-31 halftime lead. Galloway hit five three-pointers en route to 17 first-half points and finished with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc. AASU hit 13-of-24 threes as a team for 54 percent, and also got 19 points from senior Alex Carter and 19 points and 12 rebounds from junior Bryan Taylor. Francis Marion shot just 31 percent in the contest and made 9-of-36 threes on the evening, 25 percent. Michael Carter led the Patriots with 14 points.
The Lady Pirates (7-4, 2-2 PBC) got up on the Lady Patriots (3-6, 1-2), jumping out to a 19-9 lead in the first 10 minutes and coasting to a 34-20 halftime lead behind senior Audosha Kelleys 12 first-half points. Francis Marion could not cut the lead to single digits in the second half as the Lady Pirates outrebounded the Lady Patriots, 45-30, and forced 24 turnovers. Kelley led AASU on the night with 14 points, while sophomore Kaneetha Gordon chipped in 12 points. Kirby Marsh led FMU, who dropped its fourth straight contest, with a career-high 16 points.
Armstrong Atlantic returns to action on Saturday, January 7, at UNC Pembroke for a PBC doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.
