SAVANNAH, Ga. (January 5) The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s basketball team avenged its last loss at home with a 71-48 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting UNC Pembroke, stretching its winning streak at Alumni Arena to nine and completing a doubleheader sweep of the Braves. The Lady Pirates held off UNCP, 61-58, in the women’s game earlier.
The Pirates (8-2, 2-1 PBC) led by just six, 39-33, with 12:35 remaining, but an 11-3 run over the next five minutes helped put the game out of reach. AASU forced 17 turnovers and hit a season-high 10 three-pointers in the win over the Braves (6-4, 1-2 PBC). Three players reached double figures for the Pirates, led by T.T. Hall’s 14 points off the bench, 12 points from Jamaal Galloway and 10 points and nine rebounds from Franchot Brown. The PBC’s leader in assists, senior Will Kane, dished out nine assists with just one turnover. UNC Pembroke was led by Jarrell Hunter’s 12 points and six rebounds.
In the women’s contest, the Lady Pirates (8-2, 2-1 PBC) withstood a late charge by UNC Pembroke (5-5, 0-3 PBC) to come away with the three-point victory. Neither team shot well in the first half as AASU took a 27-20 lead into halftime. The Lady Pirates led by as many as 13 in the second half and led, 61-53, with 3:15 remaining, but did not score a basket the rest of the way in holding on for the victory. Junior Lindsey Holmes hit five three-pointers to lead the Lady Pirates with 15 points, while Lacey Willis added 11 and Kaneetha Gordon notched 10 points and nine rebounds. Natalie Ray led the Lady Braves with 15 points, while Lavantay Johnson added 10 points.
The Pirates return to action on Wednesday, January 9, with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern State. UNC Pembroke returns home to host Augusta State in a PBC doubleheader, also on January 9.
