Vaughan tallied 17 points to lead the UNC Pembroke womens
basketball team to a 70-59 win over conference rival Armstrong
Atlantic Saturday night, while the Braves mens squad fell
79-60 to the Pirates who had four players reach double digits.
With the win, the Lady Braves move to 8-4 on the year 3-2 in Peach Belt play. The Lady Pirates fall to 7-5, 2-3 in the league. On the mens side, Armstrong Atlantic improves to 10-2, 4-1 in conference action, while the Braves drop to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in PBC play.
In the womens contest, Pembroke only had a four-point, 31-27, lead at the break with both teams shooting 37% from the floor. In the second half, UNCP got hot shooting 52% (14-27), including 50% (3-6) from three-point range.
With 10:17 remaining in the game AASU made a charge on an Ashley Duhart three that cut the UNCP lead to four, 46-42, but Pembroke went on a 12-3 run over the next three minutes to pull away and ice the game.
Tasha Stotler added 13 points and five rebounds, while Sharkeysha Midgette led UNCP with eight boards. Tracey Lightfoot paced the offense as she dished out five assists.
Alicia Durham who netted 19 points led the Lady Pirates, while three other AASU players scored nine points apiece. Armstrongs Kaneetha Gordon led all rebounders with nine rebounds.
In the second game of the double header, the AASU
men jumped out to a commanding 47-26 halftime lead thanks to some
hot shooting. The Pirates hit
17 of 27 shots (63%) in the first half, including seven threes.
The Braves, however, hit only nine of 31 (29%) from the floor in
the first period.
In the second half, UNCP actually outscored Armstrong 34-32 as the Pirates cooled off. The Braves were able to hit 38.7% of their shots in the second period, while AASU still shot well making 12 of 26 (46%). For the game, Armstrong Atlantic made 29 of 53 (54.7%) shots from the floor and 10 of 22 (45.5%) from long range.
The Pirates were led by Jamaal Galloway, who scored 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from three-point range, while Bryan Taylor had nine boards and 16 points. Both Alexx Carterand David Lopez joined their teammates in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Chris Campbell paced Pembroke with 17 points, while fellow Brave Lee Moore hit three threes and added two field goals for 14 points. Moore also led UNCP on the glass with six rebounds. As a team, UNCP made 21 of 62 (33.9%) from the floor for the game and hit five of 15 (33.3) threes.
Up next for the both the UNCP mens and womens squads is Augusta State who comes to the Jones Center on Wednesday, January 11, for a conference double header that begins at 5:30 pm. The Pirates return home to host Lander on Wednesday.
