Men's Basketball: AASU 60, Augusta State 53

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Armstrong Atlantic State menās basketball squad won its sixth straight game with a 60-53 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Augusta State, completing a doubleheader sweep of the Jaguars at Alumni Arena on Saturday evening. The AASU women scored a 55-51 victory over the Lady Jaguars in the first game of the day.

The Lady Pirates faced off against the Lady Jaguars in a rematch of the 2004 South Atlantic Region semifinals and AASU took a 32-27 lead into halftime thanks to eight points from senior Ramona Wright and seven points and seven rebounds from Audosha Kelley. In the second half, the Lady Pirates (12-4, 2-0 PBC) could not widen the lead any further and, after both teams scored just one field goal apiece in a 6:30 stretch, Eva Vodrazkovaās bucket gave ASU a 47-46 lead with 4:37 remaining. A basket by Latoya Renwrick just 30 seconds later put ASU up by three, but it would be the last basket the Lady Jaguars would make in the game as the Lady Pirates would end the game on a 9-2 run to come away with the victory.

Kelley led all players with 17 points and 11 rebounds, her third straight double-double. Sophomore Lavonne Thomas added six points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots while the Lady Jaguars (7-6, 1-1 PBC) were led by Shirrell Fordās 12 points.

In menās action, the Pirates built a three-point halftime lead against the Jaguars, 29-26, then built the lead to 10 with 6:04 remaining on a layup by senior Travis Wallace ö two of his season-high 16 points on the evening. Augusta State climbed back into the game as Dean Brebner hit two of three free throws to close the gap to five, 56-51, with 2:19 remaining. The Jaguars (8-5, 1-1 PBC) would misfire, however, on their final five shots from the floor ö including four three-pointers ö as the Pirates (10-3, 2-0 PBC) came away with the seven-point win, pushing their current win streak to six.

Wallaceās 16 points led all scorers, while Lawrence pumped in 13 points and sophomore Bryan Taylor added nine points and 10 rebounds for AASU. Augusta State was led by Karim Telferās 14 points and Jason Mills' 13 points.

AASU returns to action on Wednesday as the Pirates travel to Morrow, Ga., to face Clayton State at 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men) in PBC action.
