SAVANNAH, Ga. Armstrong
Atlantic State swept a Peach Belt Conference basketball
doubleheader from visiting UNC Pembroke on Saturday evening at
Alumni Arena. The Lady Pirates stopped a two-game slide with a
key 58-48 win over the Lady Braves, while the Pirates hit 12
threes in out-pointing the Braves, 85-62.
The Lady Pirates (12-11, 7-9 PBC) jumped out early on UNC Pembroke (14-8, 9-6 PBC) hitting three three-pointers in building an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes. Senior Audosha Kelley hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor en route to an explosive first-half 17 points as AASU led by 14 at the break, 33-19. Despite shooting just 27 percent in the second half, the Pirates took advantage at the free throw line and held on for the 10-point win. Kelley led all scorers on the night with a season-high 24 points, while senior Alicia Durham added 11 points. Durham set the AASU all-time games played record on Saturday, playing in her 114th career contest as a Lady Pirate. Tracey Lightfoot led the Lady Braves with 13 points, while Tasha Stotler added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
In the mens contest, both teams put on a three-point shooting clinic as each club hit better than 50 percent from beyond the arc, but in the end it was the inside game of the Pirates (18-5, 12-4 PBC) that led to the 23-point win over the Braves (4-18, 1-14 PBC). AASU opened up a 38-24 halftime lead by holding the Braves to just 33 percent shooting in the first half and converted on 21-of-26 free throws (80.8 percent) for the game. AASU also hit 12-of-20 three-pointers for 60 percent and placed four players in double figures, led by senior Alex Carters 19 points and junior Tory Harris 14 points. Junior Bryan Taylor flirted with a double-double, scoring 12 points, grabbing nine rebounds and blocking a career-high 7 shots. UNC Pembroke was led by Tony Carrs double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Armstrong Atlantic returns to action on Wednesday, February 15, as the Pirates travel to Lander for a Peach Belt doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. UNC Pembroke is also in action on Wednesday at Augusta State.
