Women’s Basketball: AASU 67, GCSU 61

SAVANNAH, Ga. (February 13) – The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s basketball squad scored 60 second-half points en route to a 96-83 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting GCSU on Wednesday evening, completing a doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats at Alumni Arena. The Lady Pirates picked up a 67-61 victory over the Lady Bobcats in the day’s first action.

The Pirates (15-7, 9-6 PBC) jumped out to a 21-10 lead in the first nine minutes over the Bobcats (14-7, 8-6 PBC), but the top three-point shooting team in the league hit six straight threes to erase the 11-point deficit and go into halftime with a six-point advantage, 42-36. Junior T.T. Hall opened the second half fro the Pirates by scoring eight points in the first 2:30 – capped by a four-point play – to draw the Pirates even at 44-all. A three-pointer by Jamaal Galloway on the next trip down the floor gave AASU the lead for good, and the Pirates pulled away at the end for the 13-point win – avenging a 24-point loss to the Bobcats suffered earlier in the season. AASU shot a sizzling 62.5 percent from the floor in the second half (20-of-32), including four of six three-pointers, while also making 16 of 19 free throws. The last time AASU put up 60 or more points in a half came on November 22, 2003, when the Pirates scored 61 points in the second half of a 112-65 win over Clark Atlanta.

Senior Corey Johnson led a quintet of Pirates in double figures with 18 points, while senior Patrick Sanou recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Franchot Brown added 14 points, while Hall and Galloway each collected twelve points. GCSU was led by Graham Martin’s 26 points – tying a career high set in his last game against North Georgia a week ago – and Shaun Keaton’s 24 points. Keaton has now scored 20 or more points in four straight games at Alumni Arena.

In the women’s game, Armstrong Atlantic (14-8, 8-7 PBC) grabbed a season-high 62 rebounds in defeating GCSU (11-10, 6-8 PBC) by six. The Lady Pirates outrebounded the Lady Bobcats by 25 and held GCSU to just 30.7 percent shooting from the field, including 5-of-29 from three-point range.

Senior Kaneetha Gordon had yet another monster game as she led all players with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Gordon moved past Chiffonia Adderson for second place on the Peach Belt Conference’s all-time rebounding chart with her 15 rebounds tonight, giving her 1,055 for her career. Lindsey Holmes added 14 points for the Lady Pirates, while Lacey Willis chipped in 11 and Alandris Griffin recorded 13 rebounds to go with six points. GCSU was led by Elicia Lynch’s 14 points off the bench and Ashley Williams’ double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pirates return to action on Saturday, February 16, with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Augusta State, beginning with the women’s contest at 4:00 p.m.
