MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. The Georgia College & State University basketball teams swept a PBC doubleheader from the visiting Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates on Wednesday evening as the men won 75-53, while the women's team held on for a 68-65 victory.
The Bobcats (15-10, 10-8 PBC) held the Pirates (11-14, 7-11 PBC) to just 24 percent shooting, including 0-for-10 from three-point range, in registering the 22-point victory, the ninth loss by the Pirates in their last 10 games. GC&SU shot 52 percent in the second half to pull away from the Pirates. Senior Bart Westgeest led the Pirates with his fourth double-double of the season, registering a team-high 16 points to go with 11 rebounds, while senior Donta Humphries notched 11 points for AASU. GC&SU was led by Derrick Nicholson's 17 points and Rodney Keener's 16 points.
In the women's game, the Lady Pirates (8-17, 6-12 PBC) almost completed a furious comeback, holding the Lady Bobcats (14-11, 10-8 PBC) scoreless over the final 5:58 of the second half and cutting a 20-point lead to three, 68-65, with 29 seconds remaining. AASU could not get a tying three-point shot off in the final seconds, however, giving GC&SU its 14th straight victory over the Lady Pirates. Junior All-America candidate Zandrique Cason led the Lady Pirates with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while junior Shanetra Hodge added 11 points. Dalana Watson led the Lady Bobcats with 21 points, while Andrea Lee added 20 points for GC&SU.
The Pirate basketball teams conclude the 2001-2002 regular season with a PBC doubleheader against Kennesaw State at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23 at Alumni Arena.
