SAVANNAH, Ga. The Armstrong Atlantic State men's basketball team improved to 15-0 in the Peach Belt Conference with a 58-45 victory over Augusta State on Senior Night at Alumni Arena on Wednesday afternoon, completing a doubleheader sweep of the Jaguars.
The Pirates (23-5, 15-0 PBC) extended the second-longest current winning streak in NCAA Division II to 16 games and won by more than an eight-point margin for the first time in 13 games. Augusta State (16-9, 10-5 PBC) shot just 17.6 percent in the second half after owning a 24-23 halftime lead, including 2-of-18 three-pointers, as the Pirates took control of the game with a 11-0 run in the middle of the second half.
Senior Robert Campbell, one of four seniors on the Pirates playing their last game at Alumni Arena, led all scorers with 16 points. Senior Greg Favors grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds while senior Cyrille Mainnemarre scored nine points and senior Tavares Brown added seven points and six rebounds. Festus Hawkins led the Jaguars with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
In women's action, the Lady Pirates held off an Augusta State comeback in the last four minutes to defeat the Lady Jaguars, 66-61, their second straight conference win.
The Lady Pirates (10-15, 5-10 PBC) led by 11, 59-48, with 4:48 remaining in the second half, but Augusta State came back, scoring the next nine points to cut the lead to two, 59-57, with 3:08 remaining. The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes and, after an Ernesia Wideman bucket cut the lead to two again with 26 seconds left, ASU was forced to foul and the Lady Pirates made three of four free throws in the final nine seconds to seal the victory.
Sophomore forward Zandrique Cason recorded her first double-double since Jan. 14 with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Lori Green added her second double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Faith Nixon led the Lady Jaguars (12-13, 5-10 PBC) with 14 points and 10 boards.
The AASU men's and women's basketball teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 24 as they travel to Clayton College & State for a 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men) matchup.
