SAVANNAH, Ga. (February 6) – The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s basketball squad opened up the game on a 26-5 run en route to a 73-55 Peach Belt Conference victory over a short-handed Georgia Southwestern State squad, giving the Pirates a doubleheader sweep of the Hurricanes on Wednesday evening at Alumni Arena. The Lady Pirates picked up a 59-43 victory over the Lady Hurricanes in the night’s first contest.

The Hurricanes (6-14, 3-10 PBC) dressed just six players for Wednesday’s game against the Pirates (13-7, 7-6 PBC) and AASU took advantage early, using full court pressure to create five turnovers in the first five minutes of play en route to the sizeable early lead. Head coach Jeff Burkhamer made liberal use of his bench, getting 12 players ten or more minutes of playing time while maintaining a double-digit lead for the last 35 minutes of the contest.

Junior T.T. Hall led a quartet of Pirates in double figures with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-4 three-pointers. Junior Calvin Wilson added 14 points while Parker Hayden chipped in 11 points on 3-of-3 from three-point range. Aaron Wyatt led all scorers for Georgia Southwestern State with 20 points and Ric Roderick added 16 points.

In the women’s game, Armstrong Atlantic (13-8, 7-7 PBC) used a 21-2 run midway in the second half to pull away from Georgia Southwestern State (1-19, 0-13 PBC) and pick up the 16-point victory. The loss was the 19th straight for the Lady Hurricanes and AASU’s defensive performance was the best this season, holding Georgia Southwestern State to just 26.5 percent from the floor and just 1-of-16 from three-point range.

Senior Kaneetha Gordon led the Lady Pirates with 11 points and nine rebounds, while junior Lacey Willis chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Portia Jones added a career-high 10 points on the night. Renae Harvey led all scorers for the Lady Hurricanes with 14 points.

The Pirates return to action on Saturday, February 9, with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at UNC Pembroke, beginning with the women’s contest at 5:30 p.m.
