Men's Basketball: AASU 59, Georgia Southwestern State 56
Women's Basketball: AASU 78, Georgia Southwestern State 48

SAVANNAH, Ga. Jamaal Galloway’s first three pointer for Armstrong Atlantic State on Wednesday night was a record breaker. His second was a game-winner.

Galloway hit a three in the right corner with 7.1 seconds remaining to snap a 56-all tie and give the Pirates a 59-56 come-from-behind victory over Georgia Southwestern State in Peach Belt Conference action at Alumni Arena, completing a doubleheader sweep of the Hurricanes. The Lady Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak with a 78-48 victory over the Lady Hurricanes earlier on the day.

At the outset, the Pirates (16-6, 7-4 PBC) looked lost, going the first nine minutes and 30 seconds without a point before Bryan Taylor’s layup broke the drought. Georgia Southwestern (10-11, 3-8 PBC) took a 16-point lead into halftime, 32-16, as the Pirates made just four field goals before intermission and shot 25 percent from the floor.

The second half was a different story as the Pirates went inside against the shorthanded Hurricane squad. AASU opened the half on a 13-2 run, tied the game with 7:55 left on a Patrick Sanou tip-in at 44-all, then had the ball with 19.8 seconds left and the score tied at 56-all. The Pirates worked it to Galloway, who earlier in the half had passed Mick Jordan (183 threes) for the all-time AASU three-point basket record. His made three put the Pirates up by three, then Shawn King’s desperation three from about 30 feet away hit the front of the rim as time expired, giving AASU the win. Bryan Taylor led all scorers on the night for the Pirates with 19 points, while Tory Harris added 15 points and Galloway chipped in 10. Norbey Aragon and Adrian Robinson led the Hurricanes with 17 points apiece.

In the women’s game, the Lady Pirates (11-11, 5-6 PBC) jumped out to a 27-6 lead and cruised to the 30-point victory, the largest margin of victory for an AASU team over a league opponent since 2004. AASU hit 11-of-21 three-pointers on the night and held the Lady Hurricanes (2-17, 0-11 PBC) to just 30 percent shooting from the floor. Kaneetha Gordon led all scorers with 22 points, while Sarah Brown notched a career-high 15 points on a perfect 5-of-5 night from beyond the arc and Jennifer Anderson also reached a career high with 11 points. Brittany Reynolds led Georgia Southwestern with 14 points, while Brynne Callway chipped in 12.

AASU returns to action on Saturday, February 10, with a PBC doubleheader against Columbus State at 2:00 p.m. (women) and 4:00 p.m. (men).
