SAVANNAH, Ga. The AASU women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak by forcing 22 Clayton College & State turnovers, defeating the Lady Lakers, 65-53, and earning a Peach Belt Conference basketball split on Saturday evening at Alumni Arena.
The Lady Pirates (8-14, 6-9 PBC) jumped out quickly on Clayton College & State (9-13, 5-10 PBC), leading 18-12 in the first half and extending the lead to 28-17 with 3:29 remaining before intermission. AASU used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to open up a 17-point lead, 44-27, and eventually cruise to the 12-point victory. Junior Shanetra Hodge pumped in a season-high 16 points to lead four AASU players in double figures. Senior Lexie Martin chipped in 14 points, while junior All-America candidate Zandrique Cason added 13 points. Catreia Shaw (19 points, 12 rebounds) and Apryl Brown (10 points, 10 rebounds) each had a double-double for CC&SU.
In the men's game, Clayton College & State shot a blistering 60 percent from the field in the first half, opening up a 14-point halftime lead and pulling away with the 70-54 victory over the Pirates, sending AASU to its seventh straight loss. Kareen Harris led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including hitting both of his three-pointers, while Charlie Frazier, Jr., added 12 points. CC&SU (15-7, 12-3 PBC) shot 50 percent from the floor for the game, including 54 percent from three-point range, while the Pirates (10-12, 6-9 PBC) struggled, shooting just 38 percent from the floor and 23 percent from three-point range. Senior Willard Winn led the Pirates with his third double-double of the season, recording 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Pirate basketball teams next embark on a three-game road trip, traveling to North Florida for a 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Wed., Feb. 13 in Jacksonville.
