Zandrique Cason Earns All-PBC, PBC Tournament Honors
COLUMBUS, Ga. Junior All-America candidate Zandrique Cason, who finished the 2001-2002 season as the Peach Belt Conference's leading rebounder for the second consecutive season, was named to the All-Peach Belt Conference second team and also earned All-PBC Tournament Honors this past week at the 2002 Peach Belt Conference Championships in Columbus, Ga.
Cason finished the season by averaging 15.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, ranking seventh in the PBC in scoring and first in rebounding. Her 448 points are the eighth-most in a single season in AASU history, while her 308 rebounds are the fourth-most in a single season and her 10.6 rebounds per game is tied for the eight-best single-season mark in AASU history. The Mesa, Ariz., native also averaged 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in the PBC Tournament as AASU became the first No. 6 seed in tournament history - men or women - to win consecutive games and advance to the PBC Tournament semifinals.
In two seasons as a Lady Pirate, Cason has already scored 881 points, ninth-most in school history, and she has collected 577 rebounds, good for fourth all-time on the AASU women's basketball charts.
Cason also becomes the first AASU women's basketball player to earn back-to-back All-PBC honors since Yolanda Oliver in 1992-93 and 1993-94.
The AASU women's basketball team finished the 2001-2002 season with an 11-18 record and will return 10 players for the 2002-2003 season.
