College Baseball: No. 28 Armstrong Atlantic State 12-9, St. Andrews 3-4
SAVANNAH, Ga. The No. 28-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State baseball team used a seven-run fifth-inning to erase a St. Andrews 4-0 lead and come away with a 9-4 win in the second game of its season-opening doubleheader on Saturday. AASU won the first game, 12-3.
The Pirates (2-0) rapped out 13 hits and 12 runs in taking the first game easily, 12-3. Senior B.J. Brinkmeier went six innings, giving up two runs and striking out six for his first win of the season while juniors David Harriman and Rob Mills supplied the offense. Harriman drove in five runs, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning, while Mills drove in four runs on two hits. Jason Zizza took the loss for St. Andrews, giving up eight runs and eight hits in four innings of work.
In the second game, the Knights took a 4-0 lead after three innings as they roughed up AASU junior Ross Koenig. St. Andrews second baseman Jason Catlin hit a two-run home run his second home run of the day to give the Knights two runs in the second inning, then an RBI single by Brian Brokaw and an RBI double by Joe Maione pushed the lead to four in the third inning. The Pirates struck back, however, chasing St. Andrews starter Brett Bostick in the fifth inning with a one-out single and a walk, then the Pirates got three hits and three walks off of Tim Rall en route to seven fifth-inning runs. Pat Daly's bases-loaded single drove in two runs in the frame and Kirk Nordness had a two-run single as well. Kyle Murdock pitched three innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win of the season while Rall took the loss for St. Andrews.
The Pirates and the Knights conclude their weekend series at Pirate Field with a single game on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
