College Baseball: AASU 6, Southern Connecticut State 1
SAVANNAH, Ga. Jon Troop and Leon Boyd limited the Owls to one run and six hits as the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates improved to 7-0 with a 6-1 collegiate baseball victory over Southern Connecticut State at Pirate Field on Saturday afternoon.
Troop improved to 3-0 on the young season by giving up just four hits and one run a solo home run to the Owls Bob Pentino in five innings of work while striking out three. Boyd then pitched the final four innings of two-hit shutout ball to earn his first save of the season and help the Pirates pick up the victory.
Pentinos home run put the Owls (0-2) up by one in the third inning, but AASU responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. Brad Bohannon hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot, and Rob Recuenco laced an RBI double to put AASU up, 2-1. AASU tacked on a single run in the sixth, then broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by Adam Pelleys RBI triple down the left field line.
Recuenco, Bohannon and Devon Franklin each had two-hit days to lead the Pirates offensively, while Tyler Call collected two hits to lead the Owls.
The Pirates and the Owls will play the final game of their three-game series at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Pirate Field.
