College Baseball: No. 15 AASU 14, No. 25 Southern Connecticut State 6

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic pounded out 21 hits in completing a four-game sweep of Southern Connecticut State with a 14-6 win over the Owls on Sunday afternoon at Pirate Field.

Southern Connecticut State second baseman Joe Kahlden gave the Owls (0-4) a short-lived 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run to right field off of AASU starter Jacob Roberson, but the Pirates (8-0-1) answered back by sending 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and plating five runs, keyed by Jarin Lewis’ two-run double, to take a 5-2 lead.

Roberson settled down afterwards, hurling five scoreless and getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning when he induced a popup by Steve Gatewood to exit the game with an 8-2 lead. Roberson (1-0) picked up the win for the Pirates, throwing six innings and scattering seven hits while striking out five and giving up just two runs. AASU would stretch the lead to 11-2 in the bottom of the sixth, and after a four-run top of the eighth by the Owls, get a three-spot in the bottom of the eighth for the final 14-6 margin.

Lewis continued to pound the Owls pitching in the game, picking up an RBI single in the fourth inning and a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth, capping a 3-for-5 day with four RBI. Leadoff hitter Truman Marek also had a good day at the plate for the Pirates, going 4-for-6 with a bases-clearing triple in the eighth, collecting four RBI and two stolen bases.

Josh Terletzky (0-1) took the loss for the Owls, giving up nine hits and seven runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched, walking three and striking out three. Kahlden had four hits on the day for Southern Connecticut State, including the two-run home run, to lead the Owls at the plate.

The Pirates return to action on Saturday, February 25, as AASU hosts new Peach Belt Conference member North Georgia for a Noon doubleheader in both team’s league opener. Southern Connecticut State next travels to Alderson-Broaddus for a Noon showdown, also on Saturday, February 25.
