College Baseball: No. 1 Georgia Tech 12, No. 14 (DII) AASU 4
SAVANNAH, Ga. Top-ranked Georgia Tech used a five-run fifth inning to break open the game and cruise to a 12-4 victory over host Armstrong Atlantic State in the final game of the 2003 Memorial Health Diamond Classic at Grayson Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Yellowjackets (6-0) got a two-RBI triple from Matt Murton and a two-run home run from Tyler Greene in the fifth to jump out on top of the Pirates, 9-1. Georgia Tech added three runs in the top of the ninth, while AASU (10-1) could only plate single runs in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings.
Kyle Schmidt (1-0) hurled five innings, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out five to pick up his first win of the season for the Yellowjackets, who finished the Classic with a perfect 3-0 record. AASU junior Jon Dobyns (3-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs - five earned - and six hits in four 1/3 innings.
Brandon Boggs led Georgia Tech with three hits, including a solo home run in the first inning, while Murton, Greene and Clifton Remole each added two hits apiece for the Yellowjackets. Junior Kyle Maddux collected two hits for the Pirates, while sophomore Matt Stephens launched his first home run of the year, a solo shot to straightaway center field in the second inning.
In the other Classic games played on Sunday, Michigan hammered Rider, 15-1, while Georgia Tech defeated Michigan, 7-6.
AASU will be next in action on Thursday, February 27, as they host Mercyhurst at Pirate Field at 2:00 p.m.
