College Baseball: AASU 11-21, Queens (N.Y.) 0-2

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad pounded out 41 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Queens (N.Y.) at Pirate Field on Saturday afternoon, improving to 11-0 on the season. AASU won the first game, 11-0, then blasted the Knights game two, 21-2.

AASU lefthander Jon Troop limited Queens (NY) to just three hits while striking out seven in seven shutout innings to improve to 4-0 on the season, and designated hitter Jarin Lewis went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI as the Pirates took game one of the doubleheader, 11-0. Every AASU starter picked up a hit in the first game. Michael Morris took the loss for the Knights (0-3), giving up 11 hits and 10 runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

In the second game, the Pirates had 10 consecutive players collect a hit in the second inning as AASU plated eight runs and jumped out to the quick 10-0 lead. The Pirates then collected another eight run inning in the fourth inning on the way to the 21-2 win. It was the first time that AASU has scored 20 or more runs in a single game since March 7, 1999, when the Pirates defeated Bluefield State, 21-1. Freshman Jonnie Geiger led the 25-hit attack in game two by going 5-for-7, while sophomore Brad Bohannon added a 5-for-6 day with four runs scored and three RBI. Freshman Jared Combs collected his first collegiate home run with a grand slam in the fourth inning.

Chris Webb (3-0) gave up four hits and two unearned runs in five innings, striking out eight, to pick up the win for the Pirates. Mike Montali (0-1) took the loss for Queens, giving up 18 runs – 11 earned – in 3 2/3 innings pitched.

AASU next hosts Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday, March 3, at 2:00 p.m. in continuing 2005 Savannah Invitational action at Pirate Field. Queens takes on NWMSU in a doubleheader on Sunday at Pirate Field beginning at 9:00 a.m.
