College Baseball: AASU 7, Felician 0

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Three Armstrong Atlantic State pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout as the Pirates blanked Felician, 7-0, in college baseball action at Pirate Field on Saturday afternoon.

Pirate starter Jon Troop (1-0) hurled five no-hit innings, striking out seven, to pick up the victory and the Armstrong Atlantic offense provided Troop with five runs of support in the first three innings. Senior Rob Recuenco hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, then a wild pitch by Felician starter Chad Mayles plated sophomore Devon Franklin in the second inning. Junior Miguel Donate’s RBI double paced a three-run third inning that chased Mayles and put the Pirates up, 5-0.

AASU (2-0) added two more runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by sophomore Brad Bohannon and a sacrifice fly by freshman Jonie Geiger. After Troop’s five shutout innings, the Pirates turned to freshman Andrew Whiggum, who struck out five in two innings of one-hit relief, and senior Thomas Ferrara, who also hurled two innings of shutout relief.

Ray Rose picked up the only hit of the day for the Golden Falcons (0-2), a single to left field in the seventh inning. Mayles (0-1) took the loss for Felician, giving up five runs – four earned – and three hits in two-plus innings pitched.

The Pirates and the Golden Falcons wrap up their three-game series on Sunday, Feb. 6, at 11:00 a.m. at Pirate Field.
