College Baseball: Armstrong Atlantic State 13, Hillsdale 2
SAVANNAH, Ga. Juniors Kirk Nordness and Pat Daly hit three-run home runs to help the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates to a 13-2 win over Hillsdale in 2001 Savannah Invitational action at Pirate Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pirates (22-8) jumped on Charger starter Matt Dudek for four first-inning runs on four hits and a Hillsdale (1-7) error, but Dudek settled down and held AASU scoreless until the sixth inning, when the Pirates exploded for seven runs, highlighed by Nordness' third home run of the year and Daly's first home run of his three-year career at AASU.
Meanwhile, the Pirates held the Charger offense in check using a variety of pitchers. Junior Justin Worrell started and pitched three scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out three to pick up his first win of the year. Zach Shelnutt also held the Chargers in check, hurling three scoreless innings of relief. Dudek gave up 10 hits and 11 runs in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss for Hillsdale.
Freshman second baseman Ryan Chromek picked up four hits on the day for AASU and sophomore Chris Boaen and junior Jason Pruitt also collected two hits for the Pirates. Chris Lattig and Mike McGavin each collected two hits for Hillsdale.
The Pirates are next in action on Friday, March 23 in the final game of the 2001 Savannah Invitational at 2:00 p.m. against Kutztown.
