College Baseball: Armstrong Atlantic State 13, South Dakota State 0

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senior B.J. Brinkmeier hurled a two-hit shutout, striking out 10, as the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates defeated South Dakota State, 13-0, in 2001 Savannah Invitational baseball action at Pirate Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pirates (14-6) jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning with three runs off of South Dakota State starter Jeff Schultz. The first five Pirates reached base and senior designated hitter Bill Keifer plated two runs with a single. In the second inning, the Pirates plated three more, keyed by catcher David Harriman's two-run home run off of the scoreboard in left field.

South Dakota State (3-2) could manage just two hits off of Brinkmeier – a high chop single in the fifth by Kerry Jacobson and a single up the middle with two outs in the seventh inning by Keith Bury. Brinkmeier has now struck out 51 batters in 44 1/3 innings this season, including 29 in his last 20 innings pitched.

Keifer, Harriman and Justin Lillie each had two hits apiece for the Pirates, while Keifer drove in four runs and Lillie drove in three.

AASU and South Dakota State will meet again tomorrow, March 7, in continuing Savannah Invitational action at 2:00 p.m.
