FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 3-9-06
College Baseball: No. 9 AASU 4, Wayne State (Neb.) 3
SAVANNAH, Ga. Jarin Lewis'
RBI double in the 8th capped a two-run frame and the Armstrong
Atlantic baseball squad edged past Wayne State, 4-3, for its 17th
straight win in 2006 Savannah Invitational action at Pirate Field
on Thursday.
AASU took an early 1-0 lead on Miguel Donate's RBI single in the first, but Wayne State scored once in the 5th and got a two-run home run from Jordan Deglan to take a 3-1 lead in the sixth. The Pirates trailed, 3-2, heading into the eighth but a one-out double by Truman Marek, followed by an RBI single by Pete Gundolff tied things up. Lewis followed one out later with the game-winning RBI on a double to right center, driving in Gundolff.
Lefty Vyt Rivers hurled two innings of no-hit ball, striking out one, to pick up the win in relief for the Pirates. Reliever Adam McGuire took the loss for the Wildcats, giving up two runs and three hits in one inning. Lewis, Donate and Daniel Heflin each had two hits on the day to lead the Pirates, while Vicente Cafaro had three hits to lead the Wildcats.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday as they host Kutztown at 2:00 p.m. in continuing 2006 Savannah Invitational action at Pirate Field.
